Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one of the most physically demanding experiences a body can go through. As your body adapts to support a growing baby, the changes to your posture, centre of gravity, and hormonal environment place significant load on your spine, pelvis, and surrounding muscles. For many women, back pain, pelvic discomfort, and restricted movement are not just discomforts; they can affect sleep, daily function, and quality of life. The good news is that chiropractic care is a safe, gentle, and evidence-supported option for managing musculo-skeletal changes throughout pregnancy.

At Waterloo Chiropractic, our practitioners have experience caring for pregnant women across all three trimesters. You can read more about our team. We use low-force, pregnancy-specific techniques and specialised positioning pillows to ensure you and your baby are comfortable throughout every appointment.

How Pregnancy Changes Your Body

Several interconnected changes occur across the course of a pregnancy that can contribute to musculo-skeletal pain and discomfort:

  • A shift in centre of gravity as the abdomen grows, placing increased demand on the lumbar spine.
  • Release of the hormone relaxin, which increases ligament laxity throughout the body (helpful for birth, but which can reduce stability around the pelvis and sacroiliac joints).
  • Changes in gait and posture that alter load distribution through the hips, knees, and feet.
  • Increased thoracic kyphosis (upper back rounding) as breast tissue enlarges.
  • Muscular tension and fatigue, particularly in the lower back, glutes, and hip flexors.

Common Conditions We See

  • Low back pain: aching, stiffness, or sharp pain in the lumbar spine. See our low back pain page for a detailed overview.
  • Pelvic girdle pain (PGP): discomfort in the sacroiliac joints, symphysis pubis, or across the hips and buttocks.
  • Symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD): pain at the front of the pelvis, sometimes severe enough to affect walking.
  • Round ligament pain: sharp, short bursts of pain in the lower abdomen or groin as the uterine ligaments stretch.
  • Sciatica: shooting or burning pain down the leg, often caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve. Read more on our sciatica page.
  • Upper back and rib discomfort, particularly in the mid to late second trimester.
  • Neck pain and headaches, commonly related to postural changes and muscle tension.

How We Treat It

Your care plan will be tailored to your trimester, your specific presentation, and your comfort. Techniques we commonly use include:

  • Gentle spinal and pelvic mobilisation and manipulation (modified for pregnancy) to reduce joint restriction and improve movement.
  • Soft tissue therapy and trigger point release targeting the lower back, glutes, piriformis, and hip flexors.
  • Dry needling for persistent muscular pain, where appropriate and agreed by your obstetric team.
  • Postural advice and ergonomic recommendations for sleep positions, sitting, and daily activities.
  • Prescribed exercises and stretching to support pelvic stability and prepare for birth.

We always take a thorough history on your first visit and, where relevant, liaise with your midwife, obstetrician, or GP to ensure a coordinated approach to your care.

Is Chiropractic Safe During Pregnancy?

Chiropractic care has a well-established safety record in pregnancy. A 2014 systematic review in Chiropractic and Manual Therapies found no serious adverse events directly attributable to chiropractic care in pregnant women. Your practitioner will adapt all techniques to your stage of pregnancy, and high-force adjustments are avoided entirely.

When to See Us

You do not need a referral to visit Waterloo Chiropractic. Check our fee schedule and what to expect on your first visit. Pregnancy chiropractic care is most effective when started early, even in the first trimester, before compensatory postures become entrenched.

How Waterloo Chiropractic Can Help

At Waterloo Chiropractic, we have experience caring for pregnant women at all stages of pregnancy, from the first trimester through to the weeks before birth. Our assessment approach is thorough and pregnancy-specific: we take a detailed history, review any relevant imaging or obstetric notes, and conduct a gentle examination that accounts for where you are in your pregnancy and what you are comfortable with.

Treatment is always adapted to your trimester and presentation. We do not use a one-size-fits-all approach. Where relevant, we liaise with your midwife, obstetrician, or GP to ensure your care is coordinated. We also offer sports massage with practitioners experienced in pregnancy massage, which can complement chiropractic care particularly well in the second and third trimesters.

We see pregnant patients from across the inner Sydney area, including Waterloo, Surry Hills, Zetland, Alexandria, and Rosebery. No referral is needed to book, and most healthcare funds cover chiropractic with an extras policy.
